The Holiday Season: Time to Mull Over Summer Plans?

So it’s about that time… finals are winding down and the holidays are approaching. For some of you, that may mean you will be working a seasonal job or for others it may mean you will be vegging out on your couch. If you have some free time, why not think about your summer plans? (No, it’s not too soon, we promise!) Ask yourself: Do I want a summer job? Should I look for an internship? Do I want to get experience abroad?

If you answered yes, which we hope you did, why not let us help? Make an appointment with the Experiential Education team by calling 225-578-1548 or schedule online through our Virtual Career Consultant. Our office is open for appointments until the 23rd of December and will reopen January 4. If you would like to search for opportunities in the meantime, check out Careers2Geaux, Internships.com, or Internship-USA.com.

Happy Holidays and Good Luck!!

Competence, Confidence, and Caring

It's easy to assume what it takes to be successful, but the question of whether or not our assumptions are always on target comes with a maybe so, maybe not answer. That's why it's nice to come across articles like The New York Times' profile of Accenture chairman and CEO William D. Green. Green shares insight on leadership, change and tips on being a successful employee and job candidate. If you're applying to Accenture, no more guessing about what's important!

Not all orgs will have Q&A features with the CEO in the NY Times. Fortunately, you can take advantage of informational interviewing to get the same result. Do you know people in your field of interest? Ask them what qualities are important for their professions, companies, departments, etc. We'll even help you with the what to ask part--page 5 of our Job Search Handbook has the ins and outs of informational interviewing.

Come Thanksgiving, turn the table on your relatives. Instead of being peppered with questions about your future (what are you going to do after graduation?, do you have a job yet?, how many times are you going to change your major?), gather information from them! Trust me, you'll seem like you've got it all together. Even if you're still trying to figure it out!

Are You a Cosmopolite?

Last week, our team and a few students participated in a Webinar about studying abroad and the benefits of "being global." The presenter, renowned career-planning expert Donald Asher, shared a fun word we hadn't heard before: cosmopolite. So, what is a cosmopolite? Asher defines a cosmopolite as a "someone with a global skillset who can anticipate cultural differences . . .," and Wikipedia says a cosmopolite is a "world citizen" and "one who is at home in every place."

Asher said, "The world is going global. You either go along with it or you get left behind." Wow! That's a pretty strong statement in support of learning about and experiencing other cultures.
